We have been assigned by one of the UK's more prestigious NHS Trusts to help them recruit a Consultant in Ophthalmology - interest in cornea & external eye disease on either a Substantive or an NHS Fixed Term basis for 12 months to join their successful Ophthalmology department.


Our client currently are one of the biggest trusts in the UK, with a regional Head and Neck Cancer centre. The post will be one of nine ophthalmic consultants, each with their own specialist fields (see below), all of whom are also involved in the provision of a general ophthalmic service to the south within the area as well as some of the nearby areas. Being a large DGH with a proud history, we are big enough to get interesting cases, but small enough to care, coach and develop. With over 200 consultants, a similar number of trainees and approximately 60medical undergraduates throughout the year, which provides comprehensive care and extensive training opportunities. They have built a state of the art emergency assessment unit (Nye Bevan building) and are developing new ways of working to streamline in-patient care and optimize working with our partners. In addition, they also have a large library, gym with swimming pool, and a brand new entrance with Marks and Spencer, Subway and Costa on site

The successful appointee will be asked to undertake various duties within the department, these include: appointee will be expected, in conjunction with his/her colleagues, to provide a comprehensive Ophthalmic service, primary role will be to develop and help run the cornea and external eye disease service but it is also important that the appointee is also a capable general ophthalmologist able to undertake a general service provision, Proficiency in cataract surgery is essential and a commitment to training is likewise necessary, appointee will take part in the consultant on-call rota for emergency duties and provide, on a reciprocal basis, emergency cover for colleagues during periods of absence, this is currently 1:10 Monday – Friday lunchtime, and 1:10 Friday afternoons and weekends, appointee will have continuing responsibility for the patients in his/her care and for the proper functioning of the department & appointee will be expected to carry out teaching duties as required and take an active part in the Postgraduate Medical Education programme and in the teaching of Ophthalmic Trainees within the department. They will also be expected to contribute to the teaching and training of nursing staff and other healthcare professionals both within the department and elsewhere within the Trust as appropriate. They will be expected to regularly attend and participate in departmental educational meetings
