We have been assigned by one of the UK's more prestigious NHS Trusts to help them recruit a Consultant in Gastro on either a Substantive or an NHS Fixed Term basis for 12 months to join their successful Gastro department.

Our client's Academic Department of Medical and Surgical Gastroenterology was opened in July 1999, with the aim of further developing team working and communication and promoting joint research, audit and academic activities. All of the Medical and Surgical Gastroenterologists have offices together adjacent to the endoscopy unit, where we also have a meeting area with PowerPoint projection facilities and live video-link to the procedure rooms. We have a joint journal club, academic meetings, radiology conference, and multidisciplinary clinical meetings. The medical and surgical gastroenterology wards are adjacent, facilitating joint ward rounds.
The clients departments Endoscopy is carried out in the Endoscopy Unit next to the Day Stay Unit with three procedure rooms with a full range of up-to-date video endoscopy equipment. A wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are carried out, including endoscopic ultrasound, ERCP, stenting, dilatation, polypectomy, argon beam photocoagulation, PEG and PEJ feeding. We currently carry out approximately 3700 upper GI endoscopies per year, (including direct access) 2300 colonoscopies, 450 flexible sigmoidoscopies, 200 ERCP's and 100 EUS's. We are a recognised European Training Centre for endoscopy, and JAG accredited for bowel cancer screening. Medical gastroenterology clinics see over 2500 new patient referrals per year. Specialist clinics are provided for inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, hepatobiliary disease, nutrition and Neuro gastroenterology.

The successful appointee will be asked to fulfil various duties, such as: the current gastroenterologists in providing outpatient and inpatient clinical support to the general gastroenterology service, will take part in the emergency on call rota on a 1 in 8 basis, the appointee will contribute to the emergency medical and GI bleeding on call services, the appointee will work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in regards of performance management, responsibility for the appraisal of all doctors in training, Trust doctors and non-consultant grades as delegated by the Clinical Director, participation in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented & to work collaboratively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team, other clinical and non-clinical directorates.
