We have been assigned by one of the UK's more prestigious NHS Trusts to help them recruit a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine on either a Substantive or an NHS Fixed Term basis for 12 months to join their successful Medicine department.

Our client's The Intensive Care Unit currently comprises a 20-bedded Adult Unit which can flexibly supply both Level 3 and Level 2 care. It has approximately 600 admissions per year that are both surgical and medical in origin. We also have a busy Accident and Emergency department. The Intensive Care Unit functions as a closed unit with close ties to other intensive care facilities through the North West Thames Critical Care Network. It is recognized as a unit performing to the highest standards and has been in receipt of 2 Charter Mark Awards and a Customer Service Excellence award over the last 12 years as well as a CQC Outstanding rating in 2020. The unit has an enviable reputation in terms of both teaching and research and these are regarded as strengths it would continue to prioritise. In addition to the main ICU area, there is a 2-bedded burns intensive care which the Intensive Care consultants jointly manage with Burns Surgical colleagues. The Burns Unit is a regional centre taking the highest complexity of burn-injured patients. The existing team of ICU consultants work in a highly integrated way which is an important factor in both the quality and continuity of patient care

The successful appointee will be asked to undertake various duties within the department, these include: Develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post, the department would support the successful appointee to continue to practice any secondary specialty CCT such as Anaesthesia, Medicine or Emergency Medicine by facilitating sessions in these departments, expected to actively support and join activities on the ICU including quarterly M&M, Board meetings, weekly Mortality reviews (concurrent with MDT), and twice yearly cross site clinical governance meeting when Audit and Quality Improvement Projects are presented, successful candidate will join MDT meetings (to discuss long-term patients) on Wednesday afternoons in the non-ICU cover weeks. A central expectation of the successful candidate would be to play a leading role in the development and support of services within the umbrella of Critical Care. This may include supporting the critical care outreach team; co-developing an in-house advanced critical care practitioner programme; leading ICU POCUS education programme; continuing to develop a Post-ICU rehabilitation service; becoming the ICU liaison lead for obstetric patients. Furthermore, the successful appointee will be asked to assist in regards of teaching duties with junior medical staff within the department.
