We have been assigned by one of the UK's more prestigious NHS Trusts to help them recruit a Consultant in Histopathology on either a Substantive or an NHS Fixed Term basis for 12 months to join their successful Histopathology department.

Our Client's Department of Cellular Pathology at encompasses Histopathology and Cytopathology. It was formed in 1993 following an amalgamation of the two previous separate Departments. There is a single Departmental Technical Manager, although Cellular Pathology, is headed on the technical side by BMS2s, who are directly responsible to the Departmental Technical Manager. The Department of Cellular Pathology is situated within a block which was opened in 1980 currently, but due to expansion of services, a new site is soon to be accommodated at the University Site. This is 25mins walk/5 min car journey to the main hospital site, which will only need to be visited if autopsy practice is to be accommodated. There is an office for each of the Consultants in addition to a Registrars' room and secretarial accommodation. The new RBFT pathology lab is undergoing a major redevelopment/refurbishment program, whereby there will be a new bigger Cellular Pathology, laboratory including new consultant offices. The current schedule for completion of all this work is early January 2022, as stated above. The Department of Cellular Pathology provides a diagnostic service for the NHS Trust and local General Practitioners. The annual workload consists of approximately:-28000 Surgical Histopathology specimens (of which approx. 20% are from GPs), 450 Post Mortems (mainly coronial cases) & 2500 Non-gynaecological Cytology specimens (including 2,000 fine needle aspirates)

The appointee will be asked to fulfil various duties, these include: appointee will take part in the general diagnostic surgical pathology rota, having nominal responsibility for reporting one day in every seven. On this day the appointee will supervise the reporting of the junior medical staff, current working practice within the department is for all of the consultant pathologists to undertake a proportion of the reporting each day (as allocated by the consultant with nominal responsibility for that day's reporting) , post holder will also maintain one or two subspecialist interests (preferably Head and Neck, Thyroid, Haematopathology and Medical Liver) complementing those of the other consultants and will be responsible for clinical liaison and participating in multidisciplinary meetings in these areas, Attendance at appropriate cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings as the lead or deputy pathologist will be required. Participation in appropriate external quality assurance (EQA) schemes is expected, as is participation in relevant clinical audits, appointee will be responsible for reporting one sixth of the non-gynaecological cytology workload in conjunction with the other 5 Consultants who undertake cytology, appointee will supervise the non-Gynae cytology work reported by the registrars on equitable basis & post holder will be expected to take part in the audit, managerial and educational activities of the Department.
