Triple West Medical have been appointed by an NHS organisation based in SW Scotland to help recruit a Consultant in Infectious Diseases for a substantive post, but will also consider a Locum Fixed Term Contract for 12 Months minimum.

The NHS Trust delivers integrated acute and community health services to a population of around 350,000 across multiple sites with over 8,000 staff.

They are based in Scotland's south west region with scenic coastline and close proximately to Glasgow. There is an active postgraduate programme in the local Deanery and consultants are encouraged to participate in teaching activities for the specialty trainees.

They currently have a single duty consultant each day who is expected to provide clinical advice by phone and e-mail and manage positive blood cultures or other urgent clinical samples. When not on duty, consultants will be expected to provide a share in clinical liaison, infection prevention, diagnostic and antimicrobial stewardship duties, and to provide occasional support to the duty consultant, laboratory scientific staff and members of the infection prevention and control team.

The department has moved towards a clinically-oriented service. Most of the weekday laboratory reporting is carried out by the Lead Scientists with Advanced Practitioner role. You will be expected to liaise in a timely manner with clinicians, hospital staff, general practitioners and health protection consultants concerning the diagnosis and management of patients, and the control and prevention of infections.

They have strong links with critical care and there are daily rounds in ICU at UHC, and a weekly ICU MDT. They offer an infection ward round at the hospital, a C. difficile round and a S. aureus bacteraemia ward round weekly, plus twice weekly medical HDU ward rounds. The department participates in multidisciplinary meetings for orthopaedic infection (weekly) and tuberculosis (monthly).

You will be expected to participate in laboratory and clinical audit. The appointee will also be expected to provide advice to the clinical units supported in developing clinical guidelines, investigation protocols, laboratory SOPs, and guidance on the appropriate use of antimicrobials.

The Infection Prevention and Control Team consists of Director of Infection Prevention and Control, two senior ICNs, two clinical team leads, 7.0 WTE infection control nurses, a business manager, administrative support and a data analyst
