They are based in Scotland's south west region with scenic coastline and close proximately to Glasgow. The role is mainly based at 1 site but there would be a requirement to cover the second site which is a short distance nearby. The main site is a modern 330 bed District General Hospital serving a population of 156,000 for most specialties.

The Emergency Department had 31,600 attendances in 2023. Besides serving the local population, a large number of tourists and holiday makers visit this area, significantly increasing the Department's workload during the spring and summer months.

In-patient care for adults is provided by the Department in our adjacent seven-bedded Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU). There are currently 5 patient care pathways running in the ACU. The pathways cover a variety of conditions such as head injuries, anaphylaxis, post-sedation observation, acute intoxication and renal colic.

Consultant led Emergency Department Review Clinics are held three times per week to treat patients with minor soft tissue injuries, wounds, burns and some fractures. The Orthopaedic Department has daily Fracture Clinics during the week to which we have free access. Other clinics similarly available to us are in Ophthalmology, Ear, Nose and Throat, Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Cardiology Day Unit and the Transient Ischaemic Attack Clinic.
